One of Santa Fe’s best-loved and most iconic events is the annual SWAIA Indian Market, which draws visitors and Native art collectors from around the world. In 2021, Hutton Broadcasting partnered with Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) to publish the market’s Artist Directory & Booth Guide.
This guide is much more than a list of artists and includes articles about Indigenous art, artists, and history. Most of the writers are Native American or have years of experience working in the field of or writing about Indigenous art. It is distributed in advance of the market and is provided to visitors to guide their experience.
Hutton’s Publishing Department

Hutton Broadcasting’s Publishing Department had one year of producing the guide under their belts before taking on the important centennial guide in 2022, marking 100 years of the Santa Fe Indian Market.
Cheryl Fallstead, director of publishing for Hutton Broadcasting, says, “After publishing Neighbors magazine for several years, I felt that my team was ready to take on the responsibility of publishing the guide for this important Santa Fe tradition. It’s been a wonderful experience learning more about Native American artists and being partners with SWAIA.”
SWAIA’s Executive Director, Jamie Schulze, echoes the sentiment. She says, “I’m so impressed with what Hutton Broadcasting has done for us in publishing the Indian Market Artist Directory & Booth Guide. Their team is creative, meticulous, and professional. We’re proud to work with them.”
In 2022, Daniel Gibson joined the editorial team for the guide, and in 2023, he took on the role of editor, developing content ideas in collaboration with SWAIA and working with accomplished writers. Gibson himself is a well-known writer and served as editor of Native Peoples magazine for 12 years and wrote the book Skiing New Mexico: A Guide to Snow Sports in the Land of Enchantment. He has written his popular Snow Trax columns for the last three winters for SantaFe.com, continuing a long tradition of writing about skiing. His ski books and articles garnered him inclusion into the New Mexico Ski Hall of Fame in 2022.
Fallstead says her team is looking forward to many years of collaboration with SWAIA to help support and promote Native American artists and the market, which is an important opportunity for artists to bring their art to the world.
